Review:

This has the feel of the pilot episode for a new anime. The introductions to the characters and the story were spot on and makes the reader want to watch (read) more. I was able to read this in the time that I would have watched an episode of my favorite anime. Can not wait for the full season.

Review:

I could do as the rest of the reviews and expound on how great this book is and the I could regurgitate the plot or I can simply state that this book delivers on it's promise. This is really a book that read like a movie plays so get ready to turn the pages at neck breaking, eye crossing frame rates.

Author Interview: David H Fears author of Dark Blonde and the Mike Angel Series

About your Book: Dark Blonde and the Mike Angel Series

Synopsis – Dark Blonde

Julia Gateswood hires reluctant PI, Mike Angel, to find her missing sister, but Julia’s social position and the sordid past of the sister make this anything but a simple case. Julia’s a mysterious ex-beauty queen, who married for ambition to congressman Henry Gateswood, a charismatic ex-professor running for a vacated US Senate seat from Illinois in 1962. When Julia’s sister Gail, a loose woman with past shady connections, disappears, Julia calls on private eye Mike Angel, who quickly learns his new employer isn’t everything she seems to be, but what she is beyond a doubt is a great hypnotist of Mike’s libido.

Before Mike is hardly into the case, he’s visited by Julia’s strange secretary, who later finds the missing sister’s headless body in the guesthouse of the Gateswood estate. Mike and his unofficial partner, Rick Anthony, a 25 year veteran of the NYC detective force and, whose vocabulary suffers from too many NYU grad classes, get to the crime scene before the police and follow clues that pit them against powerful Chicago mobsters.

Rick was a partner for many years with Mike’s late father, who was murdered on his first case as a private investigator. O.W. Wilson, a famous police chief and gangbuster from Kansas City, has taken over the Chicago force and enlists Mike to seek the department mole connected with the year old Summerfield scandal, where police were in cahoots with robbers. Mike hunts for Gail’s killer while sorting out the threads of motive, political intrigue, bad cops and an arrogant DA, and Henry Gateswood’s role. All the while Mike becomes conflicted by attraction to Julia, who disappears at a critical juncture, only to discover that her husband has placed her in a sanitarium. What were Henry’s real motives for putting her away? Who killed Gail and how does she fit into Chicago mobsters on the run from the Summerfield scandal? Mike and Rick follow too many clues to a surprising conclusion.

One twisting aspect of Mike’s investigative instincts is often timely warnings from the “voice” of his late father, and also through sensations felt in a long scar Mike won during a shootout with the Russian mob who was behind his father’s death. He also struggles with a desire to commit to Molly Bennett, his office manager and love interest, while conflicted with an over-healthy desire for attractive women who cross his path.

This is the third in a series of four Mike Angel novels. These take place in NY/NJ (Dark Quarry), and Chicago in the early 1960s (Dark Quarry, Dark Lake, Dark Blonde, Dark Poison). Some actual historical characters and events are used.

What do you think readers will find most notable about this book?

David H Fears
I like to think they will recognize a tortured-soul protagonist, be pulled in by the writing style (which has been compared to Raymond Chandler and other greats), intrigued perhaps by the complex plot, glued by the page-turner aspects and charmed by the supporting cast

Free Book Reviews
Have you acquired any good anecdotes surrounding this book? If so, could you share one?

David H Fears
There are a ton of good anecdotes IN the book, but not surrounding it. If it were surrounded, I’m confident that the hero would find a way to escape!

Free Book Reviews
Did researching and writing this book teach you anything or influence your thinking in any way?

David H Fears
All four of these Mike Angel novels required some historical research into the early 1960s, and I learned a great deal about Chicago, the various mobs, and other personalities. Real events, places and many names are real. As a historian I feel these give the story verisimilitude (or truth-likeness).

Free Book Reviews
What would you most like readers to tell others about this book?

David H Fears
That they couldn’t put it down and finished it wanting to read another in the series; that they got to know the main characters and enjoyed their collaboration on crime fighting.

Free Book Reviews
Can you suggest one question readers might find interesting to discuss, concerning you, your writing in general, or this book?

David H Fears
Do you consider this novel a hardboiled mystery, or do the other subplots of seduction conflict and guilt/supernatural element make it something else? To what extent does the humor in it come across as parody, and does this add or detract to the story?

Free Book Reviews
How can readers help you promote this book?

David H Fears
They can post a line or two of positive response on Amazon’s product page for the novel, and also post in FB or Goodreads that they enjoyed the book and highly recommend it. Word of mouth is everything for an Indie ebook.

About You: David H Fears

Back in 1971 I discovered that Mark Twain had traveled through my hometown in 1895 on the way to his world tour to get out of debt. That seed began to grow until in 2004 I began what has become a monumental, 4-volume work, Mark Twain Day By Day, an annotated chronology in the life of Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Each volume (3 are now published) is 1150-1250 pages, and sell for $125 to Universities, Libraries, Societies, and Mark Twain scholars.

Just before I got into the Twain writing, I began writing short stories, a few of which morphed into a hardboiled private eye detective novel. After studying hundreds of such books, and admirng Raymond Chandler and Mickey Spillane's work, I wrote four of them--and oh! how much fun they were to write. No one had to be politically correct, and the protagonist was driven to live up to his father's legacy--he was too young to be a PI at the start (30), but he had the help of his late father's detective partner on the NYPD, and the love of a good woman who was willing to wait until wild oats were sewn. So I got totally wrapped up in these characters. I believe good mysteries must be complex page turners; hardboiled should have the protagonist fighting corruption. There's sex, violence, and psychological reflection in my novels.

I also studied composition theory, and read thousands of short stories. I taught writing at two for-profit colleges.

Today I am working on Vol. 4 of MTDBD, and also revising older short stories & novels. I've discovered the market for ebooks and have published all of my novels in such forums, along with several short stories and two collections.

Like Mark Twain, I love cats, am father to 3 girls, and am a westerner who has lived in various parts of the country.

Why do you write?

David H Fears
To tell good stories. I grew up with good storytellers and I wish to be one. My imagination runs 24/7 and urges me to write. There is no greater challenge than to continually improve one’s writing skills.

What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?

David H Fears
Besides three wonderful daughters, the completion & publication of 3 of 4 volumes (to date), some 1100-1200 pages each of Mark Twain Day By Day, an annotated chronology in the life of Samuel Langhorne Clemens.

Is there any new or established author whom you feel deserves more attention, and what is it that strikes you about his or her work?

David H Fears
There are many established writers who wrote many short stories that we don’t hear much about—Italo Calvino, Alice Munro, Eudora Welty, John Cheever—who deserve much more praise for their work. As for new authors, I’m still sampling ebooks and searching. I like some of Joe Konrath’s work, but so far most of those ebook new authors I’ve read need a good editor.

Author Interview: Dean Murray author of Frozen Prospects

About the Book: Frozen Prospects

The invitation to join the secretive Guadel should have been the fulfillment of dreams Va'del didn't even realize he had. When his sponsors are killed in an ambush a short time later, he instead finds his probationary status revoked, and becomes a pawn between various factions inside the Guadel ruling body.

Jain's never known any life but that of a Guadel in training. She'd thought herself reconciled to the idea of a loveless marriage for the good of her people, but meeting Va'del changes everything. Their growing attraction flies against hundreds of years of precedent, but as wide-spread attacks threaten their world, the Guadel have no choice but to use even Jain and Va'del in their fight for survival.

What do you think readers will find most notable about this book?

Dean Murray
I think that the magic system will be particularly interesting to readers. I've long been fascinated with epic fantasy, but wanted to stay away from the archetypical hero with incredible powers that allow him to stand off great evil single-handedly. With Frozen Prospects I've created a world where magic is dependent to a certain extent on husbands and wives working together.

Free Book Reviews
Did researching and writing this book teach you anything or influence your thinking in any way?

Dean Murray
I'm not sure that I necessarily learned anything in the course of writing this book, but I think it highlights something I needed to learn. At the time I wrote it I was still single, and didn’t really seem to be headed towards marriage. Looking back I think part of that was because I had a hard time placing the kind of trust in a person that you ultimately need in order to have a successful marriage. Possibly part of me knew that and was trying to point me towards what I was lacking by creating a world where that kind of trust was a matter of life and death.

Free Book Reviews
What would you most like readers to tell others about this book?

Dean Murray
Ultimately I would like my readers have an enjoyable experience. As a writer, I foremost need to be an entertainer, and if someone powers off their e-reader and says 'that was fun, I can't wait for the sequel', then I think I've done my job. If they turn around and tell their friends how much they loved one of my stories, then I've excelled at my job.

Free Book Reviews
Can you suggest one question readers might find interesting to discuss, concerning you, your writing in general, or this book?

Dean Murray
I've currently got a backlog of stories that I'm trying to get available to my readers, so this facet of my writing is still not as apparent as it will eventually be, but I tend to place each of my novels inside a much larger world, but I try very hard to let that larger world unfold via the stories themselves. One of the things I love very best is the way characters that seem unrelated eventually come together to have dramatic impacts on each other's lives. One of the things I hope readers most enjoy is discussing the way that various storylines are eventually going to come together.

Free Book Reviews
How can readers help you promote this book?

Dean Murray
This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart because I very much understand that it's the fans that ultimately determine the commercial success of a book. Several years ago I stumbled upon a (new to me) author that rekindled my love of storytelling. This particular author really didn’t need my help promoting their work, but I loved the story too much to care. I bought copies of the book for multiple friends, helped organize the release party for their next book, and generally just went a little crazy for a time.

For less-known indie authors like myself, word of mouth plays a huge role in driving success for an author. Readers can help out by doing everything from blogging about the book, doing guest reviews on other people's sites, or even just calling up old friends that they haven't talked to in years but who they know would just love a new author they've recently discovered. I almost forgot-don't forget to go back and leave a review on Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

About You: Dean Murray

Free Book Reviews
Why do you write?

Dean Murray
To be honest I'm not completely sure, other than that when I'm writing I often find myself sucked into a plot that is screaming to be put down on paper. I guess for me it's the other side of the experience that I love so much about being a reader. I love a good plot, mine or someone else's, and just can't seem to put one down once it's got its hooks in me.

Free Book Reviews
What is your greatest strength as a writer?

Dean Murray
This is going to sound very plebian, but I think the greatest strength any novelist can have is determination. Actually sitting down and writing a book is a herculean task that takes more hours than I like to think about. The ability to set a writing schedule and then stick to it day after day, even when the story is very much not wanting to be written is ultimately what has let me get in enough practice to where I'm now producing the kind of work that strangers are actually willing to pay real money for.

Free Book Reviews
What quality do you most value in yourself?

Dean Murray
Can I use determination again? No? Well, then I think that the ability to think long term is one of the other qualities that I think ultimately will help get me to the point I want to be in my writing career. So much of what we're fed these days is all about instant gratification, but my experience in life so far has been that most things that are worthwhile require a tremendous amount of work. There are plenty of distractions out there that make it harder for us to accomplish those worthwhile tasks, but remembering what your ultimate goals are and understanding that the payoff won't come for many months or years will help keep you on track to achieve them.

Free Book Reviews
In addition to writing, what else are you passionate about?

Dean Murray
I tend to move from one passion to the next. One of my sisters used to say she couldn't wait for summer to arrive so she could see what new hobby I'd bring home. Rock climbing, kayaking, cycling, video games. Hobbies tend to come and go with distressing regularity for those around me, but while they are around I'm 'all in' as they say. Reading and writing have been the two passions which haven't disappeared over the years.

Free Book Reviews
Is there any new or established author whom you feel deserves more attention, and what is it that strikes you about his or her work?

Dean Murray
This is a tough one. I think I'd have to say that I really wish more people were familiar with Glen Cook's Black Company novels. They have a wonderful darkness to them that I just don't know that I'll ever even try to pull off. When you combine that with the way that their central characters, especially in the first few books, aren't the movers and shakers, it really provides a unique experience. I love the way that Croaker and the rest are on the fringes of the world-shaking events without ever really becoming all-powerful.

Dreibrand counts on his relationship with Shan to protect him from the encroaching Atrophane Empire as he carefully avoids direct confrontation with his former countrymen, now under the undisputed leadership of his old rival Sandin Promentro.

But a greater malice than imperial ambition threatens the new lords of the Wilderness. The long dead civilization of Nufal, where Dreibrand and Miranda nurture their fledgling kingdom, has not forgotten the brutal genocide of its ancient war with the rys. The ghosts of Nufal may have been extinguished but their avengers remain. The inheritors of Onja’s wealth and lands will now battle the nightmare of their judgment rising.

Review:

So if you have not heard of Tracy Falbe or Brave Luck or The Rys Chronicles then I ask for you to move the rock and come on out into the sunlight. This is the best yet of the four part series and I am absolutely drooling over the fourth one as I type. I can not decide whether to read or type this. Tracy is an amazing author and deserves to sell millions and millions of copies of this series. So get to it and start buying because everyone needs a good story to read.

...And Night Falls

Synopsis:

Bullets and blackmail and beaches...a hit man and a hurricane and a high-stakes political campaign

...And Night Falls ramps up the action and suspense when Pensacola native Shelley Goodnight finds the body of a murder victim...but not just any victim. Dead man Farrell Gilbert worked at the desk next to Shelley's in her father's real estate office...an inconvenient fact the authorities can't ignore.

Add a hitman, Hurricane Ivan, and conscientious Deputy Clay Cameron from Santa Rosa County to the mix, and the tension tightens like a corkscrew.

Review:

Although I absolutely love the writing of this author I could not get into this book as the romance was a bit to heavy for me. I however did like the storyline and it was believable and intriguing but the romance just kept holding the plot down. I believe it is still worth it but would flag this as mostly romance.

Because in Meg's dreams, she kills. Or worries that she does....

Review:

I was paralyzed with fear when I went to read this one as it was my third book by this author. I expected more romance more so after the last book I read and here we go again, so I thought. I started out and before I could believe what my eyes were telling my brain I was done and I WAS entertained. This book has a bit of everything all thrown into one and then gives you more. Now I can not wait for the next book by this author.

On Berryhill Road

Navy Chief Handy McKniere wanted to build a home for his wife and daughter on Berryhill Road.

What's it like growing up under a cloud of suspicion? Will Handy's daughter Fallon be an outcast forever?

Review:

A little more on the romance side than I usually like. I still enjoyed the read and it shows the author's ability with the written word to keep me interested in the storyline rather than turned away by the romance. Nothing against romance novels just not my cup of tea.

Princess Zaara and the Enchanted Forest

Synopsis:

A captivating and magical tale, Princess Zaara and the Enchanted Forest, by children's author Umbreen Asghar is the sort of tale that sparks the imagination and fuels a child's curiosity. With lavish, highly stylized illustrations by Diane Lucas, this beginning children's book introduces a curious Spanish princess named Zaara. She's seven and the only thing she wants in the whole wide kingdom is to explore the forest that is just beyond her empire, so when she gets a chance, she jumps at it. She discovers that the forest is all she has ever heard or dreamed about, and there in the mesmerizing dark folds, keeping her royal lineage a secret, she makes friends. They're a curious lot. There's Morgan the Giant, Elvin the Elf, Banji the Bear and Tiffany-Annabel, all who bring something special to the group. When an evil wood spirit puts a spell on her new pals, Zaara shows courage and tenacity befitting the best sort of princess--the kind that is a friend first.

Review:

My children actually fought over this one. They each wanted to read it again and again. Do not confuse this with a picture book and if you plan on reading it aloud to your kids keep in mind the length as this is a good size book meant for 7-11 year old's to read. Otherwise do not hesitate to pick this one up.
