Siege of Darkness

Review written by R.J. Palmer author of Birthright

Synopsis:

Tragedy strikes Zithel, and the city of monks goes up in flames. The Earth-Wizard Mazarian has disappeared, and the army of Asgoth has taken back the Wizard Crystals of the Elements, ready to deliver them into the hands of their master: the Demon Lord Abaddon, where they will be corrupted and used against the very elements they were created to protect, deforming the world to a blackened void. As Darshun Luthais—the chosen Guardian of earth—emerges from the mystical Shajin Island, having completed his training, ready to combat the forces of evil, he not only finds himself in the center of this chaos, but is also torn in different directions. Part of him longs to obey the wisdom of the Elders by relocating the crystals and fleeing Asgoth, while his Nasharin nature thirsts for battle, eager to take on the many trials that stand in his way, keeping him from what he desires most, challenging Abaddon, the ultimate terror.

Review:

I thought that the natural progression between books was absolutely fabulous and J.W. Baccaro did a remarkably good job running one novel into the next though there is a marked difference between timelines as the first novel covers several years and the second covers much less time and is more descriptive.
Part 2 reads more like a graphic novel or a script for an anime in places with the characters self-narrating in their thoughts and there tends to be more emotion infused into this part of the story than in the first part which brings a more three dimensional aspect to the story. The first novel seems a little less thought out and more two dimensional as far as character development.
The main character is so full of himself as to seem more like an egomaniac instead of the hero of the series and his pride leads him into many difficult situations ill-suited to a twenty something. He seems more like a teenager at these points, ten foot tall and bullet proof for lack of better description. He is prone to leaping before he looks and following his more youthful impulses which truthfully makes me wonder somewhat about the age of the author for it seems to me that the writer of the series must be very young or even young at heart to have come up with such an in-depth storyline which nevertheless smacks of teenage over confidence and lack of patience.

Prophecy of the Guardian

Review written by R.J. Palmer author of Birthright

Synopsis:

The Second Great War between the Light and the Dark has begun, and Abaddon the Demon Lord is searching for the four ancient Wizard Crystals of the Elements.
Once the Crystals are in his hands, and corrupted to evil, he will destroy the forces of Light upon the earth, and transform the world into eternal darkness.

But Darshun Luthais, one of the last Nasharin warriors, along with a few companions, sets out on a quest to find the Crystals first. Along the journey they encounter giant six-legged serpents, the ruthless Cullach, and other entities of darkness; yet the most challenging obstacle is Darshun's constant struggle against temptations of evil, and his vow to hold to the faith of all who are calling him the Guardian—the prophesied warrior who will bring down the Demon Lord.

Review:

First and foremost let me say that I absolutely adore the plot and the blending of mysticism and faith for it makes a most enticing and wildly entertaining storyline that I thoroughly enjoyed reading. There was obviously a great deal of time and attention spent interweaving more than a few different ideas and turning them into a cohesive and believable story. Well done and I commend you.
Now on to less than favorable points that I have to touch on, much to my chagrin. While the story itself seems to be written for the young adult genre, I found it difficult to distinguish at times for there were some more adult descriptions that after having read the novel I find myself in a bit of a quandary about whether or not I would be willing to let my preteen children read it. There were some scenes that I would prefer for a young adult not to read and some descriptions that would not be suitable for their age; sexual references and battle scenes and the like.
The story itself was chock full of misspellings, grammatical and punctuation errors, and errors in tense with one sentence being past tense and the very next present tense which threw me off from time to time and while I am normally of an extremely placid disposition about such things, the errors did pull me out of the story. There was also an ever present blend of older and more proper English and modern slang which confused me and made it difficult to be drawn into the plot.

The Up Country Man

Synopsis:

In April 1967, a young British engineer arrives in Nigeria to take up his new job. The country is seven years into a volatile independence and Ken Ryeland struggles to come to terms with the culture shock and the endemic tribalism that pervades every level of society. On being transferred to Enugu, capital of the troubled Eastern Region, he is further challenged when the Regional Military Government rebels against the Federal Military Government in Lagos. An act of secession quickly follows and the short-lived Republic of Biafra is born. Almost immediately the new republic is plunged into a bloody and bitter war of survival with the Lagos Government and Ryeland finds himself trapped in the rebel enclave as Federal troops close in for the kill.
The Up-Country Man is a personal account of the events leading to secession and conditions inside Biafra during the early days of the Nigerian civil war.

This book contains content that may not be suitable for young readers 17 and under.

Review:

A word of warning to those who may find interest in reading this book, if you are easily offended by non political correctness then you may want to think twice. However, if you are like me and prefer the truth told to you undiluted then this will be an interesting read. This book gives a better understanding of the trials and tribulations of Nigeria through the eyes of a white male (harsh I know but again the truth). Knowing this was written from a non-native's perspective, I knew to discount the details as being colored in that direction. I still feel that this book does a great job of giving everyone a better understanding and in the least see what forced government can/will do.

Author Interview: Jennifer Rainey author of These Hellish Happenings

About your book: These Hellish Happenings In 1707, hapless vampire Jack Bentley made a pact with the Devil in order to escape a vampire hunt. Dealing with Satan seemed better than your standard angry mob at the time. But three centuries later, Satan is ready to collect His dues, whether the vampire likes it or not. He's taking Jack down to Hell, and He's even got a job picked out for him down below: an eternal position at the Registration Office of the Damned. Jack attempts to adjust to life on the Administrative Level of Hell where fire and brimstone have been replaced by board meetings and the occasional broken copier. But the whiny complaints of the recently-deceased and the legions of suited, cookie-cutter demons are the least of his problems. Try adding to the equation a dead ex-lover, a dangerous attraction to his high-ranking demon companion, Alexander Ridner, and the sticky and distorted anti-vampire politics of a Hell that is surprisingly like our own world.

What do you think readers will find most notable about this book?

Jennifer Rainey
I hope that readers will find These Hellish Happenings to be original. I set out to craft something that was creative and could have a life of its own, and I hope that I've done that.

Free Book Reviews
Have you acquired any good anecdotes surrounding this book? If so, could you share one?

Jennifer Rainey
Well, I first got the idea for the book when I was grocery shopping, and I still get that tingly inspirational feeling when I go to that specific grocery store. The main character just stepped into my head, introduced himself and before I knew it, he'd kidnapped me and forced me to write his story! Three years later, here I am with one book published, and the next in the series in progress.

Free Book Reviews
Did researching and writing this book teach you anything or influence your thinking in any way?

Jennifer Rainey
I learned a lot about the mythology surrounding Hell! And I ended up using very little of it because I wanted to put my own stamp on the underworld. But still, I've retained a lot of the info, so if you ever need to know something about Hell, give me a ring. :P

Free Book Reviews
What would you most like readers to tell others about this book?

Jennifer Rainey
I would hope that they'd tell others to buy it, haha! Seriously, I hope they'd say it was humorous and quirky and something they should pick up if they'd like a read that's a little different.

Free Book Reviews
Can you suggest one question readers might find interesting to discuss, concerning you, your writing in general, or this book?

Jennifer Rainey
One topic I love discussing is the portrayal of vampires in literature. My vampires in These Hellish Happenings are very unsexy creatures. They're ungraceful, flawed, sometimes a little on the dorky side and about as far from Anne Rice or Stephanie Meyer as you can get. I'd like to ask readers how they like their vampires.

Free Book Reviews
How can readers help you promote this book?

Jennifer Rainey
Tell people about it. Get the word out. It would delight me!

About You: Jennifer Rainey

Jennifer Rainey was raised by wolves who later sold her to gypsies. She then joined the circus at the age of ten. There, she was the flower girl in the famed Bearded Bride of Beverly Hills show until the act was discontinued (it was discovered that the bearded lady was actually a man). From there, she wandered around the country selling novelty trucker hats with vaguely amusing sayings printed on front. Somehow, she made enough money to go to The Ohio State University for a major in English.

Free Book Reviews
Why do you write?

Jennifer Rainey
I'd go mad if I didn't, haha! I have to have some way to get these stories and these characters out of my head.

Free Book Reviews
What is your greatest strength as a writer?

Jennifer Rainey
I would say my dialogue is my greatest strength; I've always been very proud of it, and so far, readers have been very complimentary of it as well.

Free Book Reviews
What quality do you most value in yourself?

Jennifer Rainey
I'm very dedicated to my work, and I do not stop until I get a job done. No matter what kind of task it is, I really stick to it. I feel like I've let myself down if I don't.

Free Book Reviews
In addition to writing, what else are you passionate about?

Jennifer Rainey
I'm in a folk band, and I love music. Listening to music, playing music, discussing music with other people. I might be considered a bit of a music snob by some, but I think that's only because I'm so obsessive about and defensive of the kinds of music I like, haha! I don't mean to be a music snob, or anything, it just tends to happen.

Free Book Reviews
What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?

Jennifer Rainey
I'm most proud of writing and publishing These Hellish Happenings. It took several years and a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get it all done, but the first time I saw it in print, I was beyond ecstatic. There was a lot of shrieking if I remember correctly!

Free Book Reviews
Is there any new or established author whom you feel deserves more attention, and what is it that strikes you about his or her work?

Jennifer Rainey
She's established already, so established that she's dead, but I have to say Charlotte Perkins-Gilman. She's an incredible writer; the first time I read her short story The Yellow Wallpaper, I was absolutely floored by how artfully-crafted and subtly terrifying it was. Unfortunately, I have not encountered her very much outside of college English classes, and I wish more people talked about her!

Free Book Reviews rules of Posting

Currently our list of books to read is at 260 books as of this post. We are making every effort to get trough them as fast as possible but we still want to give each book its rightful time to be read. We are currently reading an average of 4-6 books per week and posting the reviews when time permits. In order to make this blog a little less confusing and a little more concise we are going to be making a few changes. Reviews will be posted on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Now on to our review policy:

Review Policy:

1. We do not give stars except for on other review sites that require star ratings.

2. We do not summerize the book(novel) in our review as we believe that adding the provided or available book synopsis to the post is clear enough besides a review is supposed to relate the feelings the book draws out not have the plot regurgatated.

3. Because of our respect for the written word and our belief that writing takes up time and effort we accept every book (except Erotica) submitted and place it in our TBR (to be reviewed) list. Keep in mind that it may take one or more months to get a review accomplished but we believe the wait is worth it. Also keep in mind that because of this our reviews may not be favorable to each submitted book.

4. Once a book has been reviewed we will email the link to the author and also place it on Twitter, Facebook, YouSayToo and Zimbio. To maximize your exposure we recommend that authors link the review on as many sites as possible. The more traffic your post gets the more exposure you get.

5. Our reviews are final and we will not change them for anything or anyone (with the exception of mispelling or mislinking). If an author complains about a review that does not have an exception the email will be posted as a comment.

6. We do allow and want authors to guest review books. Guest reviewing gives you as an author more exposure and also shows fans that you can be friendly to another author (whether you post a good/bad review). To review a book on our blog just send us a review of one of our TBR books (or one you know of that may not be on our list) and email your review to arobbins78 at gmail dot com.

7. To get your book reviewed just email arobbins78 at gmail dot com. In the email provide the name of your book, any links of where it can be purchased, your blog/website link, and a synopsis of your book unless you are fine with us using the one we find on Amazon....ETC.

8. Each review is the sole opinion of the author of said review. Again each book may or may not get a great review or even a good review. Please accept this as if an author emails us about a review and it is not about a typo or mislink then we will post the email as a comment to the review and still not change the review.

9. Submissions are on a first come first served basis, therefore if you check our TBR you can get an idea of how long you will need to wait for a review. Also we review the first copy submitted and do not accept numerous submissions of the same book, however we do like series.

10. We prefer authors to submit a coupon for Smashwords or gift from Amazon. We also accept print copy that can be mailed to the following:

Author Interview: Jessica Tate author of Through Smoke

About your book: Through Smoke

My second novel takes place in New York City and is about a firefighter named Michael McGinnis who is part of the Fire Department of New York. He has had a troubled past which includes the death of his father when he was just fourteen as well as a younger brother Casey, who he’s had to look after. As adults they both still face struggles. Michael has problems with alcohol and Casey is a drug addict and gambler. A violent bookie gets involved with both of them and there is also a romance that develops between Michael and fellow paramedic, Eva. The plot intertwines and involves blazing infernos, high-rise saves, romance, dangerous bookies, and tough brotherly love.

Free Book Reviews
What do you think readers will find most notable about this book?

Jessica Tate
It is set in New York in the borough of Hell’s Kitchen. The city itself feels like it’s own character. While there are a few sub plots going on, the reader will find that each storyline will intertwine with each other to bring the book together.

Free Book Reviews
Have you acquired any good anecdotes surrounding this book? If so, could you share one?

Jessica Tate
I chose to write about an FDNY firefighter because I have visited New York several times and have stopped by several firehouses. Ladder 21, where Michael works at in the book, is one that I make sure to stop at and say hello any time I’m in the city. I also love Hell’s Kitchen and it is the borough I’m most familiar with.

Free Book Reviews
Did researching and writing this book teach you anything or influence your thinking in any way?

Jessica Tate
Definitely. Despite the fact that I was already familiar with Hell’s Kitchen, I still found information about the borough very interesting. One thing I didn’t know before writing Through Smoke was the reasoning behind the name of the borough. Back when Hell’s Kitchen was first formed, many immigrants from Ireland, Cuba, Italy, and all over the world mingled in one neighborhood. Around dinnertime they would all be cooking their ethnic foods and if you stood out on the street the smells all collided as one. Someone made a comment that it smelled like the “kitchen from hell” and the name stuck. Not only that, but New York is a city where you learn something new everyday. There’s always something happening.

Free Book Reviews
What would you most like readers to tell others about this book?

Jessica Tate
I would feel really honored if readers who enjoyed the plot and characters would tell others that Eva, Casey, and Michael were well developed and interesting. I hope that they actually seem like real people and I’d like for readers who found that to be true to pass it along. Without good characters a story is incomplete.

Free Book Reviews
Can you suggest one question readers might find interesting to discuss, concerning you, your writing in general, or this book?

Jessica Tate
I could see someone really pondering the fact that I’m a country girl from Texas but show a lot of interest for the big city of New York and feel just as home there as I do out on the ranch.

Free Book Reviews
How can readers help you promote this book?

Jessica Tate
Reviews are always helpful but also, any time there is a suggestion area on sites that people post in hopes to find new material, just a mention of the book does immense amount of work in promoting and getting it out there. Readers like suggestions from other readers.

About You: Jessica Tate

My name is Jessica and I have lived in Texas all of my life. I am currently a student at Texas Tech University and with my free time I enjoy reading, writing, long distance running, basketball, golf, being outdoors, and spending time with my family. I love to travel as well.

Free Book Reviews
Why do you write?

Jessica Tate
Writing is like my therapy. I write things that I’d love to read. It just feels so powerful to be able to think up your own characters and do anything you want to them. I like the progression a character goes through as I write the story. I love giving them their own personality. I’ve always enjoyed telling stories and entertaining people that way. It’s my creative vice since everyone who knows me knows very well that I certainly can’t draw!

Free Book Reviews
What is your greatest strength as a writer?

Jessica Tate
I feel that my description is the strongest part of my stories. I am a visual person so I try to put the reader right in the scene with the character, right down to the emotion, the way the person is feeling, and exactly what they are seeing.

Free Book Reviews
What quality do you most value in yourself?

Jessica Tate
I usually succeed at anything I put my mind to. I’m a go getter and when someone tells me it isn’t possible, that’s when I want to try even harder and prove them wrong!

Free Book Reviews
In addition to writing, what else are you passionate about?

Jessica Tate
Sports! I have been an athlete since I could walk. I love playing sports, watching them, writing about them, and everything in between.

Free Book Reviews
What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?

Jessica Tate
So far, I am proud of the fact that I have two published e-books. Also, I have an associate’s degree from South Plains College and am about to have my Bachelor’s from Texas Tech University. It has taken me longer to get my education than a “normal” student, but the way I see it, as long as I’m going and haven’t quit yet, it’s something to be proud of.

Free Book Reviews
Is there any new or established author whom you feel deserves more attention, and what is it that strikes you about his or her work?

Jessica Tate
I have a good friend that I do writing sessions with a few nights a week. We share the same writing style and share the same interests in TV shows and entertainment. Her name is Mary McDonald and she has two books out – No Good Deed and March Into Hell. They are two books in a series and she is currently working on the third book. Her work strikes me because she is very good at the description part of storytelling as well. She really knows how to put you right there alongside the characters as if you were in the room with them.

Her interesting perspectives on animal intellect and unique insights into nature take the reader on a thought provoking, entertaining and often hilarious ride. The star of the book, Pickles, takes his adventures in stride with wit and charm. Pickles is an intelligent parrot who constantly challenges Georgi to keep up with him, both physically and intellectually. His demanding, outspoken yet fun loving attitude places both himself and his owner in some very amusing, and sometimes embarassing, situations. Georgi touches a bit on nature, as it pertains to Pickles when he is outside in his aviary - their beautiful yard, trout pond and wild birdlife. She speaks of the trials and tribulations of owning a parrot - diet, behaviour and bird intellegence - but for the most part, this book is about the antics of a parrot who thrives on attention and mischief.

Paris 1934: Victory in Retreat

Synopsis:

In Depression-era France, Sorbonne student Sandrine covers news and fashion as a part-time reporter for an American paper in Paris. She banters with the Americans after work at the local bistro as red wine flows and stories grow in the telling. Early in 1934, with public outrage at government corruption peaking, she witnesses massive street riots by Far Right leagues that overthrow two French cabinets in a row. The very existence of the Third Republic is threatened. Then one bold man prevails against the forces of disorder.
Spring brings adventure as Sandrine listens to sweet assurances whispered in the soft light of a romantic Paris cafe. Summer brings new friends and midnight dancing to le hot jazz at swanky Longchamps racetrack during the Grande Semaine of the summer social season. Days later, vivacious Sandrine joins the hard-partying Americans as they drink and dance their way through the festive streets of Paris on Bastille Day.
In the fall, unknown to Sandrine and her friends, dark secrets from the 1920s French occupation of the German Rhineland cloud the present as the rising Nazi menace in Germany reveals unspoken threats. Destinies and events intersect in October 1934 when a Yugoslav king arrives in France for an important state visit in this novel of accurate historical event and captivating romance.

Review:

Although the story was well written, the details were the devil in this one. I appreciated the historical accuracy involved but I thought that the character introductions came late and kept the reader from getting into the character's story. Other than that it was a good story.
