My book, "Uncommon Magic", is a YA fantasy romance. In it, the heroine, Mira Meadowmarsh’s world is turned upside-down when her island is invaded by ruthless Magicians. Now, Mira must choose between rescuing her brother, an insurgent who is the Magicians’ most wanted criminal, and remaining true to her betrothed, a young man with special powers who has allied himself with her hated enemies in order to save himself and his family.

What do you think readers will find most notable about this book?
Michelle Scott
In this book, Magicians are the bad guys. And I mean they are really bad guys! Because they are so powerful, they feel that they have the right to do as they please with the un-magical 'commons'.

Have you acquired any good anecdotes surrounding this book? If so, could you share one?
Michelle Scott
I used my own dog as a model for the two that are in the book. My dog, Bandit, is very clever and sweet-tempered, just like in the book. When my daughter read it for the first time, she of course recognized Bandit right away. And, later on, when the dogs in the story get into trouble, my daughter said she was too sad to keep reading since all she could think of was our family pet. (But don't worry...no dogs were harmed in the making of this book!)

Did researching and writing this book teach you anything or influence your thinking in any way?
Michelle Scott
I didn't do much research for the book, but when I wrote it, I was thinking of the 'rags to riches' stories I used to love when I was a kid. You know the ones...like "The Little Princess" where the poor, friendless orphan becomes the wealthiest, most beloved person in the town. Story elements like drafty attic rooms, cruel headmistresses, and mean rich girls have always favorites of mine. Oh, and love triangles.

What would you most like readers to tell others about this book?
Michelle Scott
This a book about bravery and risking your own safety to help others, but I also think it is a funny book as well. And full of surprises.

Can you suggest one question readers might find interesting to discuss, concerning you, your writing in general, or this book?
Michelle Scott
One question that came to my mind after writing this book was, just how far would I go to protect someone I loved? Would I break the law? Would I go to jail?

Why do you write?
Michelle Scott
I'm not sure. I think it's a genetic thing. Both my parents were avid storytellers when I was growing up, and I just naturally started making up stories on my own.

Is there any new or established author whom you feel deserves more attention, and what is it that strikes you about his or her work?
Michelle Scott
Yes! I am a huge fan of Galen Beckett who wrote "The Magicians and Mrs. Quent". Her book is a fantasy that's written like a Jane Austen novel. If you love Gothic mysteries, I highly recommend hers. Strangely, she just doesn't get much of a spotlight which is shame.
